The Michigan Psychodrama Center recently announced 8 new workshops, half of which are one-day workshops, and half of which are three days weekend workshops. The workshops cover many topics and are useful for therapists, lawyers, businesspeople and others interested in personal growth and/or those wishing to learn about sociometry, psychodrama, spontaneity-creativity theory and role theory and how the tools of psychodrama can help them personally and professionally.
The 2017 season kicks off on October 14, 2017 with a workshop entitled The Hero’s Journey: An Intro to Story Telling in Action. This one-day workshop will use Joseph Campbell’s seminal work Hero with a Thousand Faces as a starting point to explore universal story structure, archetype and shadow sides. This workshop is perfect for those interested in learning more about the versatility of psychodrama and the power of transformation. 7 training hours can be credited toward certification by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy.
The first three-day workshop will take place on November 3 – 5, 2017 and is entitled The Courage to be Vulnerable: Experiencing the Power and Beauty of Imperfection. Shame is the most painful of all human emotions. Vulnerability in shame-based families is viewed as weakness and can cause members to hide vulnerability in order to protect from humiliation and punishment. This workshop will help participants identify these patterns, heal shame and build courage. 17 training hours can be credited toward certification by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy.
Next up on December 2, 2017 is another one-day workshop, entitled The Inner Critic, The Ghost and the Advocate: Challenging Painful Cognitive Distortions using CBT in Action. Based on Dr. Corby’s innovative approach at combining psychodrama with CBT. n this workshop, participants will learn about cognitive distortions and maladaptive schemas and how negative belief systems can persist into our adult lives from childhood. They will put scenes into action that concretize schemas to modify them and replace them with healthier paradigms. Great for therapists interested in learning more about CBT or psychodrama. 7 training hours can be credited toward certification by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy.
The year 2018 kicks off with another one-day workshop entitled Bibliodrama as a Warm-up to Psychodrama: Seeing your Story in the Universal Story of Others. Using the underlying framework of psychodrama, participants will learn a new way of storytelling and interpretation applicable to their stories and the stories of others. In this workshop, we will explore the most famous murder of all time – Cain’s murder of his brother Abel! Full of archetype and the universal feelings and experiences of envy, shame and sibling rivalry, this workshop works as both a stand-alone as well as a continuation of the Hero’s Journey workshop. 7 training hours can be credited toward certification by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy.
Next is the sure to be popular workshop addressing co-dependency. Entitled Rescuing the Forgotten Self: Healing from the Death Trap of Codependency, this three-day workshop takes a deeper look into the abandonment of the self and addresses the exhausting pleasure-rescuer role. takes place March 2-4, 2018. 17 training hours can be credited toward certification by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy.
Another one-day workshop is slated for May 5, 2018 and is entitled Recovery in Action – Using Psychodrama to Heal Addiction. This workshop is highly useful for therapists who work or wish to work in recovery. Additionally, this workshop is useful for anyone who’s life is touched by addiction – people in recovery, or those who love others with an addiction. Open to all with any level of psychodrama experience. 7 training hours can be credited toward certification by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy.
The season wraps up with two three-day workshops, the first of which is scheduled for June 22-24, 2018. Entitled Giving Back Shame: Releasing Toxic People and Healing Psychic Wounds. In this workshop, we will identify shame-based messages and manifestations and utilize experiential methods including bodywork to release shame and hurt that plagues our core being. 17 training hours can be credited toward certification by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy.
The final workshop of 2018 is Through the Looking Glass: Entering into the Enchanting World of the Authentic Self. In this workshop, we will spend time in discovering more deeply the beauty of the authentic self, a self which was created perfectly in a time before our experience in a world where shame and trauma harmed our innocent nature. 17 training hours can be credited toward certification by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy.
All workshops will present sociometry, psychodrama, spontaneity-creativity theory and role theory. Participants will learn and practice techniques for use in their field of interest. Attendees will experience and learn about the roles of group member, auxiliary ego, protagonist, and director. Sessions will offer unique instruction in the application of experiential methods to a variety of life circumstances and themes. In addition, by being involved in all the roles of psychodrama, participants will benefit from deep personal growth work.
Psychodramatic methodologies of role reversal, doubling, mirroring and future projection will be demonstrated and experienced. All training hours can be credited toward certification by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy.
